That Time Neighbors Complained About My House Construction Noise

So, I’m not famous or anything, but I did have this experience with some neighbors getting upset about construction noise at my house. It was during a renovation project at a detached house in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. We were doing some major remodeling and, of course, that involves a lot of drilling, hammering, and general construction sounds. It’s just unavoidable when you’re tearing things down and building them up again.

We had hired contractors, and they assured us they would be careful and try to minimize any disturbance. They even said they were talking to the neighbors regularly. But, you know how it is with construction. Even when you try your best, there’s always noise. It was particularly bad on some days. I remember one afternoon, it felt like they were drilling non-stop for hours. I felt pretty bad about it.

Eventually, some neighbors did complain. I guess it was understandable. Living in a quiet residential area, all that noise can be quite disruptive, especially if it goes on for a while. I ended up having to issue a public apology through my personal YouTube channel. I explained that we were aware of the inconvenience and would be more considerate moving forward. It felt a bit awkward, having to apologize publicly for something like construction noise at my own home, but I figured it was the right thing to do to smooth things over.

The construction itself took a while. I don’t recall the exact duration, but it felt like months. It’s funny, because when you’re not involved in the day-to-day of it, you just see the finished product. But going through it, you realize how much effort and disruption is involved. The contractors kept saying they were managing the site carefully and communicating with residents, but you can only do so much to silence a jackhammer.

One thing I learned, or rather, was reminded of, is that even if you’re not doing anything wrong, construction naturally creates a nuisance. It’s not like we were being deliberately noisy. It’s the nature of the work. But that doesn’t negate the fact that it bothers people. It’s kind of a difficult situation because you need to renovate your home, but you also need to be a good neighbor. I guess being proactive with communication is key. We tried, but maybe not enough, or maybe the complaints just came from people who were particularly sensitive to the noise. It’s hard to say.

After all was said and done, and the renovation was finally finished, things settled back down. The noise stopped, and life returned to normal. But I still think about it sometimes. It made me realize how important it is to manage expectations and be extra mindful of your surroundings, especially in close-knit residential areas. It wasn’t a huge disaster, but it was definitely a stressful period, dealing with the construction and then the fallout from the neighbor complaints. It was a pretty significant renovation, and I think the cost was somewhere in the ballpark of several tens of millions of Korean Won, but the exact figure escapes me now.

  1. It’s amazing how a seemingly small thing like construction noise can really highlight the impact of living so close to others. I’ve had similar experiences with landscaping work – the sheer volume of sound just shifts your whole sense of peace.
