Figuring Out Car Interior Cleaning Kits and Stuff

So, I was looking into getting some stuff to clean the inside of my car. It’s not like it’s super dirty, but you know, little bits of dust, maybe some crumbs from snacks on a long drive. I saw this thing about Hyundai Mobis having a collaboration with a stationery company, Monami. They were selling limited edition interior cleaning kits, apparently called ‘Oror’.

I wasn’t really sure what was in these kits. The articles mentioned things like an ‘Oror Interior Kit’ focused on interior cleaning. It sounded like it came with a cleaner and some special cloths or something. The whole collaboration thing with Monami, the pen company, was kind of interesting. They put some of their stationery items, like maybe a special pen or notebook, into the car care kit. It felt a bit like collecting merchandise, which I guess is what they were going for to make car care items more appealing. It was only available for a month, in May, which I missed out on because I only started looking into it now.

It got me thinking about what actually goes into a good interior cleaning kit. Is it just a spray and a microfiber cloth? The ‘Oror’ kit was about 30,000 won, from what I could gather from some online chatter, which seemed a bit much for just a cleaner and a cloth. I ended up just buying a generic interior cleaner spray and a pack of microfiber towels from a regular auto parts store. They were way cheaper, like maybe 10,000 won for both. The spray I got is just a multi-surface cleaner, supposed to be safe for dashboards, plastics, and even faux leather. It smells okay, not too chemically.

I tried using it the other day. You spray it on the cloth, not directly on the surface, which is supposed to be better. Then you wipe. It did a decent job on the general dust and smudges. For the really stubborn spots, like where some spilled coffee dried on the center console, I had to spray it directly and let it sit for a minute. Then I scrubbed a bit with the cloth. It came off, but it took some effort. I still have this weird sticky residue on one part of my door panel that I can’t seem to get rid of. I’m not sure if it’s from the cleaner or something else entirely. Maybe I should have tried a different kind of cleaner, or maybe that special cloth they included in the limited edition kit would have made a difference.

Another thing I was wondering about was those glass coating sprays. Some people mentioned glass water repellent coatings and wet coatings. Are they the same thing? I bought one that said it could be used on glass, but it also mentioned it could be used on the paint. I wasn’t sure if I should use the water repellent one on the glass and then the wet coating on the rest of the car, or if one did both. I ended up just using the one I had on the glass, and it seemed to make the water bead up a little better during the last rain. But I still have water spots on the paint that aren’t going away. Maybe I should have gotten a separate product for the paint or a different type of glass treatment altogether. It’s hard to tell if these things are really worth the hassle or the money. For now, my generic cleaner and towels seem to be doing an okay job, even if there are still a few lingering spots I need to figure out.

  1. The sticky residue on the door panel is really frustrating – I’ve had similar issues with cleaners leaving a film. It makes you wonder about the different materials in car interiors and how they react to different chemicals.

  2. The sticky residue on the door panel is really common with those multi-surface cleaners – it’s likely dissolving some of the plasticizers in the panel.
